Pastor James Rice Love Offering
May 19, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
On May 19, 2019 Great Smyrna will be taking up a love offering for Pastor James Rice who will be returning from Whitakers to Lumberton, NC. To learn more, please read the situation as shared by Robeson Baptist Association, Director Of Mission, Alan Taylor:
Many of you know James Rice. He grew up in the area and was a pastor of McDonald church and a member and deacon at Long Branch. About a year ago, James went to Whitakers, NC for his first fully funded pastor position, at the age of 50.
About seven weeks ago James suffered a massive heart attack. He has been in intensive care at the University of North Carolina Hospital at Chapel Hill since. So far, the congregation he pastors is continuing to pay him. The Director of Missions in the area is assisting in having that salary extended as long as possible. I don’t know, even with his efforts, how much longer that arrangement will last.
Therefore, plans have been made for his family to ultimately return to Lumberton. His family owns a mobile home that James was in the process of making much needed repairs. James would travel down from Whitakers (near Rocky Mount) for a day, or two every few weeks to work on projects. Now, it appears that James may need to return to Lumberton when his hospital and rehabilitation stays are over. Obviously, he will be in no shape to affect those repairs.
I have been in contact with the Baptist Rebuild Center here in Lumberton. The Baptist on Missions leadership has agreed to let incoming mission groups do the work that is needed. This will include flooring repairs, bathroom repairs and a ramp so that he can get into the home. The labor will be provided at no charge. However, we need to come up with the money necessary to provide for the materials.
I am having a Pod storage building placed on the property next Monday. Everything in the house will be placed in the Pod, so that mission group work can be as effective and efficient as possible. It is my hope that this will be able to be accomplished in two to three weeks.
That cost looks like it will be $6,000 or so. I am asking you to help me get this project done so that this family can return to Lumberton after medical care. You may send any contributions to the association and I will handle getting the funds to the Baptist on Mission Rebuild Center. Should there be any contributions over the materials cost, I will forward those to the Rices.
Thanks for helping James and his family. I appreciate your willingness to pray and give.
